The pandemic labor market has exacerbated the barriers that American women face in the workplace. Much has been written about this, but what LiveCareer found lacking was comprehensive data on what working women themselves want. So, in May 2021, they conducted a survey of 354 American women.
Women need child and elder care.
Of the respondents:
- 48% were parents of children under the age of 16
- 33% made up single-parent households
- 28% were caregivers for adults
Access to affordable child and elder care was incredibly important to the working women in the study. But access to affordable care doesn’t only enable employment. It also allows women to progress in their careers, earn higher salaries and undertake career and technical education and training.
More than 70% of survey respondents cited the importance of affordable care in each of the three following facets of career advancement:
- Pursuing new job opportunities
- Earning more money
- Undertaking additional training or education
