Forty-Nine States Enact 241 Policies to Support Career Technical Education
Advance CTE and ACTE Release Fifth Annual Report Examining State CTE Policies

Alexandria, VA – Last year saw a significant expansion of state Career Technical Education (CTE) policy, with 49 states and the District of Columbia enacting 241 CTE-related laws, executive orders, boards of education actions and budget provisions, far exceeding the number of policy actions in 2016. Today, Advance CTE and the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) released their fifth annual report, State Policies Impacting CTE: 2017 Year in Review, summarizing these policy activities, and identifying major themes and trends in CTE policymaking in 2017.

This report, the only one of its kind that provides an overview of all CTE-related laws, regulations and state actions, identifies funding as the top policy category for 2017, as it has been in each year’s publication, with 44 states passing funding-related provisions. This was followed by data, reporting and/or accountability (42); industry-recognized credentials (39); dual/concurrent enrollment, articulation and early college (38); and industry partnerships/work-based learning (36). The significant increase in policy actions was influenced by implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act.

ACTE Announces Board of Directors 2018 Election Results

Alexandria, VA – The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) is pleased to announce the results of the recent election for several spots on its Board of Directors. The election was open to ACTE’s membership of 25,000 educators, administrators and other CTE professionals. The following members were elected:

Nancy Trivette, President-Elect
Ms. Trivette is the state agricultural education program leader and state FFA advisor for the New Jersey Department of Agriculture. Her one-year term will begin in July 2018 and will be followed by one-year terms as president and past president, respectively.  

Scott Stone, Agriculture Education Division Vice President
Mr. Stone is an agriculture instructor with the Centralia R-VI School District in Centralia, Missouri. He will serve a three-year term beginning July 2018.  

Linda Romano, Health Science Education Division Vice President
Ms. Romano is a health science educator with Newburgh Enlarged City School District in Newburgh, New York. She will serve a three-year term beginning July 2018.

Mark Branger, Region V Vice President
Mr. Branger is the technology director for Huntley Project Schools in Worden, Montana. He will serve a three-year term beginning July 2018.

Lisa Stange, Region III Vice President-Elect
Ms. Stange is a CTE consultant for the Iowa Department of Education. She will serve a three-year term beginning July 2019.

Nicole Cobb, Guidance and Career Development Division Vice President (appointed)
Dr. Cobb is the director of school counseling for Metro-Nashville Public Schools in Nashville, Tennessee. She will serve a three-year term beginning July 2018.

Additionally, vice president-elects whose election occurred last year will join the Board as vice presidents in July 2018. Patrick Biggerstaff in Administration and Dick Lowe in Postsecondary, Adult and Career Education will both assume the position of vice president in their respective divisions.

ACTE 2018 Fellowship Program Participants Announced

Alexandria, VA – The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) has announced the selection of 15 participants for its National Leadership Fellowship Program, which provides educators with an opportunity to enhance their leadership skills and involvement in professional organizations. The program identifies, trains, and motivates a cadre of leaders who will continue to advance efforts which support an educated, prepared, adaptable and competitive workforce.

The Fellowship Program is a one-year commitment from January 1 through December 31, 2018. Each of ACTE’s five regions and several Divisions are all represented in the program. In addition to more experienced educators, this year’s fellowship class includes a cohort of new professionals, geared towards those with 2-5 years of CTE experience. The 2018 class of fellows is listed below, with an asterisk (*) denoting the cohort of new professionals.

The fellows are required to complete several activities throughout the year, including conducting an in-person visit with a local, state and federal legislator, writing blog posts, attending at least two required events and submitting a final summary of their accomplishments to ACTE’s Board of Directors.

Doug Major will serve as the Fellowship Coordinator for the class of 2018.  He is a former ACTE President and the Superintendent/CEO of Meridian Technology Center in Oklahoma. Additionally, the Executive Committee recently selected Major to continue serving as Fellowship Coordinator through 2020.

ACTE Announces Participants in Inaugural LEAD 2018 Program

Alexandria, VA – The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) has announced the selection of 20 CTE professionals from across the country to participate in the inaugural class of ACTE’s Leadership Exploration and Development (LEAD) program. The program is for new CTE professionals with 2-5 years of experience. Participants will meet twice throughout the one-year program for workshops, leadership training, and more.

ACTE LEAD is funded through ACTE’s Opportunity Fund, a designated fund for new and innovative programs benefitting the Association. Dr. David W. Jones, formerly of North Carolina State University, serves as the Leadership Consultant for the program, providing expert leadership development training for the participants. The purpose of the program is to develop leadership skills in ACTE’s up-and-coming leaders so they can continue to thrive as educators and leaders in their professional contexts as well as within ACTE.  Participants are required to complete the full day pre-conference sessions, one prior to VISION 2017 and a second prior to NPS 2018.  Over 100 individuals expressed interest in the program by beginning the application process. Applicants were required to complete an application detailing their leadership experience as well as their hopes for leadership growth in the future.

Nashville to Host 2017 National Association for Career and Technical Education Conference
The largest annual gathering of CTE professionals in the nation will take place from Dec. 6–9

WHAT:
The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) will host its annual CareerTech VISIONconference, the largest gathering of career and technical education (CTE) professionals in the country, in Nashville, TN later this year. The Association’s annual conference provides professional development to thousands of CTE professionals through hundreds of CTE sessions covering the complete spectrum of secondary and postsecondary CTE, classroom tools, public policy updates, and more. The CareerTech Expo and Career Pavilion also provide opportunities to network with business and industry representatives.

This year, Isaac Lidsky, entrepreneur and author, will provide the opening keynote address. Kayleen McCabe, host of DIY Network’s Rescue Renovation, will provide the closing keynote. A panel of state and local CTE leaders, moderated by Tamar Jacoby, President & CEO of Opportunity America, and including Dr. Scott Ralls, President of Northern Virginia Community College; Mrs. Heather Justice, Tennessee Executive Director of CTE; and Commissioner Stephen Pruitt from the Kentucky Department of Education; will also address the full conference.

An awards banquet will take place on Wednesday evening where ACTE national award winners will be announced. On Saturday, the second-ever STEM is CTE Symposium will be held to bring together education and business leaders to address access to STEM-related career paths.

ACTE Statement on Poll Showing Public’s Overwhelming Support for CTE

Alexandria, VA – Yesterday, Phi Delta Kappa International released its 49th annual report titled, Poll of the Public’s Attitudes Toward the Public Schools. The wide-ranging survey of education issues was conducted in May 2017 with more than 1,500 people in all 50 states.

Some of the poll’s findings related to career and technical education (CTE) include:

  • 82 percent of respondents believes public high schools should offer job or career skills classes.
  • More than half of respondents said their local schools should offer more CTE classes.
  • 86 percent of respondents believe students should have access to certificate or licensing programs through local schools.
  • 97 percent of respondents believe technology and engineering classes are at least somewhat important to school quality.

“As CTE has evolved over the years to meet the needs of both students and the economy, our community has worked hard to ensure the public is aware of the terrific opportunities available to CTE students,” said ACTE executive director LeAnn Wilson. “It is gratifying to see the public recognize the critical role CTE has to play in both a students’ academic and career success.”

“As Congress continues to work on its Fiscal Year 2018 budget, we encourage appropriators to give careful consideration to the broad public support for CTE found in the poll,” Wilson continued. “To meet the public’s demand and support for high-quality CTE, Congress should commit to restoring cuts to the Perkins CTE basic state grant program that have occurred over the last decade and redouble its efforts to prioritize additional investments in CTE.”

Sophomore in Fayette County Public
Schools Wins National Award, Prize for School

Alexandria, VA  Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced McIntosh High School sophomore BrooksBaro as the national student trophy design winner in its second annual student trophy design contest. Brooks is a sophomore at McIntosh High School in the Fayette County Public Schools in Georgia. His teacher is Larry Singleton, who teaches architectural drawing & design and AP computer science at McIntosh. The  contest was sponsored by Stratasys,Ltd., a manufacturer of 3D printers and production systems.

Since 1954, ACTE has awarded those who have made exemplary contributions in the field of career and technical education (CTE). The student trophy design contest is a competition for students to design the 3D trophy to be used to award the national winners at the association’s annual VISION conference. This years conference will be held in Nashville, TN with roughly 4,000 educators, administrators and CTE industry stakeholders in attendance. Brooks submission was selected by ACTE’s Board of Directors out of nearly 400 entries from students all across the country. In addition to having his design used to create this years trophies, Brooks will receive a $1,000 scholarship and McIntosh High School will receive a free one-year lease of a 3D printer,  courtesy of Stratasys, Ltd. ACTE will also provide Brooks and Mr. Singleton with a trip to Nashville to be honored at the awards banquet.

In his application, Brooks said designing was a major part of his life that he loved, while also stressing that persistence plays a key role in creating the perfect product. Like other students all across the country, CTE was critical to helping Brooks further his passion. He credited an architecture class with helping him enjoy using CAD [computer-aided design] programs.Brooks gave a nod to the importance of education in his design, describing the gimbal in his winning design as representing the fact that no matter what is happening around the world, teaching will always continue and be a major part of society.

CTE classrooms all across the country are breeding grounds for the next generation of American innovators, entrepreneurs, engineers, and more, said ACTE Executive Director LeAnn Wilson. Brooks outstanding achievement, and his testimonial about CTE, are further evidence of the critical role high-quality CTE plays in maintaining and growing America’s role in the global economy. We are so proud of Brooks and his accomplishments, and we are honored to have him be such a public ambassador for all that today’s CTE has to offer.

We were impressed with the high level of creativity among the many designs, says Gina Scala, Stratasys Director of Global Marketing for Education. The complex and moving parts in Brooks design, along with its aesthetics, make his entry stand out. Brooks project really showcased the
capabilities of additive technology. We are pleased to partner with ACTE to encourage the next generation of designers, coders and engineers, and we are excited to loan the 3D printer to McIntosh High School so Brooks and other students can continue to pursue their passions.
