ACTE Announces Kentucky Associate Professor as National Award Finalist

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Dr. Doris Sikora, associate professor at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky, as the 2019 ACTE Region II Teacher Educator of the Year. This award recognizes teacher educators who have demonstrated innovation in teacher education, leadership in improving career and technical education (CTE), and commitment to preparing teachers to deliver high-quality CTE programs.

Dr. Sikora started her teaching career in a Home Economics high school classroom. After 17 years Dr. Sikora knew she wanted to train teachers,  so received her PhD in 1997. While she finished her dissertation she was an extension specialist at UT Knoxville. Then she became the teacher educator at Western Kentucky University. While at Western she served as the teacher educator, then department head for seven years and then again as a teacher educator. Her research agenda included brain research and was focused on teacher development and professional development for the classroom teacher. She is a passionate teacher and lets her FACS Ed students know that she is there for them.

Dr. Sikora is very active professionally. She has held numerous offices for the local and regional Kentucky Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (KATFACS), was state board secretary for KATFACS and was Vice President for Teacher Education for the Kentucky Association Career and Technical Education (KACTE) for a number of years before serving as President elect, President and Past President. She has been the only person to serve two consecutive terms as President for KACTE. Dr. Sikora continues to serve by providing professional development workshops and presentations.

Dr. Sikora is one of five finalists for the 2020 national title. The national winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Gala, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event will take place on Wednesday evening, December 4, during ACTE’s CareerTech VISION 2019 in Anaheim, CA.
