ACTE Announces New York Assistant Principal as National Award Finalist

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Nicole Zergebel, Assistant Principal of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, CTE division of Eastern Suffolk BOCES located in Bellport, New York, as the 2020 ACTE Region I Administrator of The Year. This award recognizes administrative career and technical education (CTE) professionals at the school, district, county, state or federal level who have demonstrated leadership in ensuring teacher and student success and have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and effective career and technical education programs.

Zergebel is a graduate of Bucknell University, where she was a scholar-athlete, served on the Board of Directors for the Bison Athletic Club for close to fifteen years, and continues to be an alumni ambassador for the University and athletic department.  Zergebel’s experiences as a scholar-athlete continue to be an integral part of her life.  Zergebel has completed two Masters Degrees, and is currently enrolled in an Ed.D Program at Long Island University for Interdisciplinary Studies, and is an active participant in multiple adult sports leagues, including soccer, softball and volleyball.  Being a scholar-athlete even as an adult has contributed to her personal educational philosophy as well as instilled and groomed academics and skills that are both transferrable and integral in her role as an educational leader. Zergebel believes that CTE students can thrive in the same light as scholar-athletes.  They receive industry content and experience as well as the leadership skills necessary to be successful in their post-secondary endeavors.

Zergebel is one of five finalists for the 2021 national title. The national winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Gala an award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event will take place on Thursday, December 3, during ACTE’s Virtual CareerTech VISION 2020.  The Awards Gala is sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, Goodheart-Willcox, CareerSafe, and Stratasys.
