My Service to the South Carolina Business Education Association

I joined the South Carolina Business Education Association (SCBEA) planning committee in September 2016. As a member of the planning committee, I participated in meetings to schedule presenters and plan logistics for the annual SCBEA conference which was held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The conference this year was held during February 1-5, 2017.

I volunteered to be on the Technology Committee to help set up and transfer technology needed for presenters to deliver powerful and effective presentations during the conference. The technology team also made sure that the equipment was stored away properly and returned to the SCBEA members after the conference.

The conference provided many South Carolina educators with professional development sessions geared towards STEM education with a focus on computer science and robotics. There were various sessions that included programming and how to be active as an ACTE member.

The computer science requirement for graduation is no longer going to be Integrated Business Applications (IBA); there is a legislation in process which will require the computer science credit to be directly related to computer science or programming. There are several classes that will be accepted in addition to IBA for this year. The Business Education Associate, Tony Dillon, provided an update during a session but stated that there has not been a specified single course that will be required as the computer science credit for graduation as of yet.  Legislative updates are being sent out as received.

During the SCBEA conference, there was a panel of professors discussing the future of computer science and engineering. The focus was on recruiting students in South Carolina to work in manufacturing jobs in an effort to close the skills gap that exist in South Carolina.
