ACTE Announces Virginia Teacher as National Award Finalist

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Karen Roberts, Teacher at Manor High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, as the 2023 ACTE Region II Teacher of the Year. This award recognizes the finest career and technical education (CTE) teachers at the middle/secondary school level who have demonstrated innovation in the classroom, commitment to their students and dedication to the improvement of CTE in their institutions and communities.

Karen Roberts is a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher in Portsmouth, Virginia with 27 years of experience. She began her career in the middle school setting and in 2007 was transferred to the high school to start the Early Childhood Education program. With the program thriving, she transitioned to another setting to teach Nutrition and Wellness. As a devoted educator, Karen believes that students should be introduced to new experiences and opportunities as much as possible. To that end, she has secured over $25,000 to support her program. Karen is a 2022 ACTE Experienced Fellow and was profiled as a WAVY News 10 excellent educator – an initiative to celebrate local teachers who have gone above and beyond for their students and communities. She is the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) adviser, Educators Rising adviser, Key Club advisor, and sponsor of several other activities. She is a member of several professional organizations and serves as an officer on several.

Roberts is one of five finalists for the 2024 national title. The national winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Gala, an award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event will take place on November 29, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. The Awards Gala is sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, Goodheart-Willcox, The Army, and Stratasys.
