Post-9/11 GI Bill and CTE

?Some things you should know:

• The Post-9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill and other education and training programs administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), make up the education and training benefits available to Veterans, Servicemembers and their families.
• The Post-9/11 GI Bill does not replace the Montgomery GI Bill, both are currently active.
• Those eligible for both the Post-9/11 GI Bill and any other GI Bill program, must make an irrevocable election of the Post-9/11 GI Bill prior to receiving any benefits.
• GI Bill programs are available for training at non-college-degree institutions. The payment amount varies depending on the GI Bill program selected and the type of non-college-degree institution attended.?
• Participation in apprenticeships or on-the-job training is also covered under GI Bill programs.
• GI Bill programs may provide a reimbursement for the costs of licensing and certification tests. The VA pays only the test cost (or up to $2,000 for each test), and only provides reimbursements for approved tests. Search for approved tests by state online.?

What benefits does the Post-9/11 GI Bill provide?

• Tuition and fees?paid directly to the institution.
• A housing allowance based on where the school is located.
• A $1,000 a year allowance for books and supplies.
• A onetime payment of $500 for certain individuals relocating from highly rural areas.

Who is eligible for benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill?

• The Post-9/11 GI Bill is an education benefit program for individuals who served on active duty after September 10, 2001.
• Those who served at least 90 aggregate days on active duty after September 10, 2001 or were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-related disability after serving 30 continuous days are eligible.
• The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides up to 36 months of education benefits, generally payable for 15 years following release from active-duty service in the military.

How can my program better serve Veterans?

• Visit the American Council on Education’s Toolkit for Veteran Friendly Institutions.
• Participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which allows community colleges, universities and other degree-granting schools to contribute up to 50 percent of the expenses incurred by students that exceed the tuition fee amounts payable under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The VA will match the institution’s contribution.
