ACTE Announces New York Health Science Educator as National Award Finalist

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Linda Romano, Health Science Educator at Newburgh Enlarged City School District in Newburgh, New York, as the 2022 ACTE Region I Carl Perkins Community Service Award. This award recognizes the finest career and technical education (CTE) teachers at the middle/secondary school level who have demonstrated innovation in the classroom, commitment to their students and dedication to the improvement of CTE in their institutions and communities.

In 2006, Linda Romano started a nurse aide program at Newburgh Enlarged City School District, her program began with 12 students and has grown to a full Health Science Education pathway educating over 300 students. This program which began with herself as a teacher now has 4 teachers which she mentored to meet the increasing enrollment.  In 2019, her program earned the NYS Model CTE Program.  Within her school community, she is highly involved with her school, faculty, and students.  She sits as chair on the School Leadership Team, Health and Safety Team, Adviser to Red Cross Club, Blood Drive and most recently Health Occupation Students of America.

Linda is also a Medical Reserve Volunteer and has volunteered her services as a nurse during the initial COVID outbreak and most recently to provide vaccines through the Department of Health in Goshen and surrounding areas, administering vaccines to those eligible in each phase as per NYS Governor’s office.

She was awarded 2018 National Teacher of the Year by the National Association for Career and Technical Education and has served as ACTE Health Science Division VP. Linda is dedicated to serving as a diversity advocate in her role on ACTE IAED Advisory, and serves as a mentor. In 2022, Linda was recipient of the Drexel University Harold W. Pote Behind Every Graduate Award.  This prestigious award nomination is very meaningful as it came from Linda’s student who felt inspired by her to become a nurse. This student graduated Drexel University’s Nursing Program June 2022.

Linda has published the curriculum for the NYS Education Department for Certified Nursing Assistant and has published work as a contributing author for Health Science: Concepts and Applications published by Goodheart-Wilcox and most recently Nursing Assistant- A Nursing Process Approach for Cengage publishing in 2021. Linda’s mission and lifestyle are of a servant leader, her joy is helping others.

Romano is one of five finalists for the 2023 national title. The national winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Gala, an award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event will take place on November 30, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. The Awards Gala is sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, Goodheart-Willcox and Stratasys.
