Storytelling Experience


To complete the storytelling experience assignment:

Students are instructed to email their partners and request a time to meet, either virtually or in person, with staff and preschool classroom to discuss and practice the art of storytelling. Students will work to develop a good understanding of what is expected and how to prepare.

  1. A book is selected so that students can practice.
  2. A time is set for students to observe other adults storytelling; they will be given the opportunity to do so themselves.
  3. Student and mentor(s) meet to complete the feedback form and discuss if
    student should read another and focus on areas for improvement.

Students may opt to have their mentor record a portion of their storytelling experience and some of the children’s reactions. This video could be uploaded, shared with the whole class, and discussed. Doing so presents a great opportunity to build community and alleviate any anxiety and nervousness among ECE students.

Encourage students to use feedback from their mentors and classmates to write a 500-word reflection about the experience. Include the following details:

Preparation

  • Book title?
  • Why did you choose this book?

How did you do?

  • Did you convey enthusiasm about the story?
  • Did you keep the tempo lively?
  • Did you suggest different voices for the characters?
  • Did you set the mood (show the book cover, ask children make comments about the cover or predict what the story is about? Did you use a prop?
  • Did you read the story with pleasure or feeling?
  • Did you point out illustrations?
  • Did you share the mechanics of the book (title, author, cover, read from left to right, etc.)?
  • Did you ask questions while reading (“What do you think will happen next” or “why do you think” questions)?
  • Were you interrupted? How did you handle those interruptions?
  • How did you maintain children’s interest?
  • How did you end the story?
  • Reflections

    • What did you think you did really well?
    • What areas do you need to practice and/or improve upon?
