To complete the storytelling experience assignment:
Students are instructed to email their partners and request a time to meet, either virtually or in person, with staff and preschool classroom to discuss and practice the art of storytelling. Students will work to develop a good understanding of what is expected and how to prepare.
- A book is selected so that students can practice.
- A time is set for students to observe other adults storytelling; they will be given the opportunity to do so themselves.
- Student and mentor(s) meet to complete the feedback form and discuss if
student should read another and focus on areas for improvement.
Students may opt to have their mentor record a portion of their storytelling experience and some of the children’s reactions. This video could be uploaded, shared with the whole class, and discussed. Doing so presents a great opportunity to build community and alleviate any anxiety and nervousness among ECE students.
Encourage students to use feedback from their mentors and classmates to write a 500-word reflection about the experience. Include the following details:
Preparation
- Book title?
- Why did you choose this book?
How did you do?
Reflections
- What did you think you did really well?
- What areas do you need to practice and/or improve upon?
