ACTE sat down with Leslie after the Awards Banquet at CareerTech VISION 2014.

Since entering the CTE field in 1982, Leslie Watkins has contributed invaluably to Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) educators nationwide. After serving in various positions at the state association level, Watkins served as president and in various chair positions for the National Association Teachers of FACS, as well as the ACTE vice president for the FACS Division. During her term on the ACTE Board, Watkins served on the Executive Committee and recruited multiple business partners to provide professional development at CareerTech VISION, as well as contribute more than $20,000 to the Division. During the past four years, she has served on the FCCLA Board, filling the roles of chair of the Board and the Search Committee.

Before her retirement in 2010, Watkins was a FACS teacher and advisor to an active FCCLA chapter that impacted hundreds in the community through their service projects. As a nationally board-certified teacher, Watkins was a mentor for her peers; she also served as a student teacher-mentor and supervisor for 15 years and as an adjunct professor at Murray State University. Watkins developed dual-credit courses for her students and worked to connect them to scholarships and opportunities for college. She wrote and was awarded 25 grants that provided opportunities for the entire student body, and has presented at many state and national conferences. She has been recognized with numerous awards throughout her career for her contributions to CTE. “Leslie has gone above and beyond as a leader within the CTE community,” says Timm Boettcher, president of Reality works. “She is involved, dedicated and caring-a ‘poster child’ for ACTE lifetime achievement.”
