ACTE Announces Washington Educator and Adviser as National Award Finalist

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Cheryl Uceny, Family and Consumer Sciences Educator and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Adviser at Kittitas School District in Kittitas, Washington, as the recipient of the 2019 ACTE Region V Carl Perkins Community Service Award. This award recognizes individuals who have used career and technical education (CTE) to make a significant impact in their community and demonstrated leadership in programs and activities that promote student involvement in community service.

Uceny currently teaches Family and Consumer Sciences at Kittitas Secondary School where she has been teaching for the past 30 years. Uceny enjoys teaching and finding new ways to make her teaching engaging and relevant. She has had three former students become Family and Consumer Sciences teachers, including her daughter, and enjoys collaborating with them. She has spent many years integrating and building her 6-12 grade FCCLA chapter. She has had many successes through FCCLA. They have won several National Program Awards, competed for Washington state at the National Leadership Conference for the past 15 years consecutively, and have been fortunate enough to have several State Officers for the Washington organization. This year the Kittitas chapter had their very first FCCLA National Officer elected. Uceny says the best part about teaching is showing students their potential and providing them opportunities that allow her to watch them go after it.

Uceny is one of five finalists for the 2020 national title. The national winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Gala, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event will take place on Wednesday evening, December 4, during ACTE’s CareerTech VISION 2019 in Anaheim, CA. The Awards Gala is sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, Goodheart-Willcox, CareerSafe, and Stratasys. For more information about the ACTE Excellence Awards, visit our webpage.
