OHIO COUNSELOR A FINALIST FOR NATIONAL CAREER GUIDANCE AWARD
ALEXANDRIA, VA - The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announces Janet Baughn, an Associate School Career Pathway Counselor with Greene County Career Center as the winner of the Region I ACTE Career Guidance Award. Baughn is one of five finalists competing for the 2014 national title. The ACTE Career Guidance Award recognizes school counselors and career development professionals who are currently making significant contributions in career and technical education (CTE) programs in their communities and/or states and must have made significant contributions to advocate, educate and communicate the value of CTE as a viable career option to a variety of audiences, including students and adults.
This guidance award, in its second year, is sponsored by Kuder Inc., a provider of online solutions for career planning. The winner will be announced at the Awards Banquet, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country, which will take place on Wednesday evening, December 4, 2013 during CareerTech VISION 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As a career pathway counselor, Janet Baughn was at the center of several innovative programs to improve the services offered to students the Greene County Career Center. Baughn was instrumental in the decision to make the career center a High Schools That Work site and volunteered as coordinator for 11 years. As the literacy team leader, she brought Collins Writing, MAX Reading Strategies, the Drop Everything and Read Program and a staff reading club to the career center-strategies to help student success that are still utilized. She also coordinated training on differentiated instruction, for which she received positive feedback from teachers about how the training changed their classroom practices. Under Baughn's leadership, the career center was recognized as one of the top schools in Ohio offering additional help to students.
Her superintendent said, "The ability to adapt, to organize and to lead with enthusiasm has allowed Janet to gain the respect of students, as well as the respect and admiration of professional educators, parents and community leaders throughout the county and state."
The Awards Banquet is sponsored by Cisco, Kuder, Inc., Stratasys, CEV Multimedia, Ltd., and Certiport. For more information about the Awards Banquet at CareerTech VISION 2013: https://www.acteonline.org/vision_banquet
