October 9, 2013
ALEXANDRIA, VA—The Association for Career and Technical Education announces Barrett Richardson, a project manager with Career Tech Skills Center in El Reno, Oklahoma, as the winner of the ACTE Region IV Career Guidance Award. Richardson is one of five finalists competing for the 2014 national title. The ACTE Career Guidance Award recognizes school counselors and career development professionals who are currently making significant contributions in career and technical education programs in their communities and/or states and must have made significant contributions to advocate, educate and communicate the value of CTE as a viable career option to a variety of audiences, including students and adults.
This guidance award, in its second year, is sponsored by Kuder Inc., a provider of online solutions for career planning. The winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Banquet, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country, which will take place on Wednesday evening, Dec. 4, 2013, during CareerTech VISION 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Barrett Richardson is the project manager for a successful and evolving young-offender training program at the Career Tech Skills Center in El Reno, Oklahoma. The center currently partners with Francis Tuttle and Autry Technology Centers to provide welding and construction training and GED preparation to probationers, at-risk youth and incarcerated students. Richardson recruits and screens prospective students and assists them with their needs throughout the program, including obtaining identification and other legal documents, applying for social services and federal grant programs, making sure they have suitable housing and, upon completion of the program, assisting students to secure and maintain employment. His supervisor said, "Barrett has learned the importance of providing these young people with a second chance before they go to prison … his level of personal motivation and sustained productivity are exceptional."
Richardson has helped his students secure services from charities and acceptance into transitional and sober living communities, and has also coordinated volunteer projects for his students to allow them to give back. By conducting follow-ups and stalwartly advocating for his students throughout the hiring process, Richardson has earned the trust of business and industry partners. His guidance has given students an invaluable second chance to transform their futures, helping them apply learned job and life skills to repair damaged family relationships and reenter society as assets rather than liabilities. Through his unrelenting support and belief in his students' potential, Richardson has empowered significantly disadvantaged young adults to overcome their circumstances and become caring, productive citizens.
