Georgia Teacher a Finalist for National Career Guidance Award
October 8, 2013
ALEXANDRIA, VA—The Association for Career and Technical Education announces Barbara Mackessy, a career development teacher with the Bartow County Board of Education, as the winner of the ACTE Region II Career Guidance Award. Mackessy is one of five finalists competing for the 2014 national title. The ACTE Career Guidance Award recognizes school counselors and career development professionals who are currently making significant contributions in career and technical education programs in their communities and/or states and must have made significant contributions to advocate, educate and communicate the value of CTE as a viable career option to a variety of audiences, including students and adults.
This guidance award, in its second year, is sponsored by Kuder Inc., a provider of online solutions for career planning. The winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Banquet, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country, which will take place on Wednesday evening, Dec. 4, 2013, during CareerTech VISION 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As a career development teacher at Woodland Middle School, Barbara Mackessy brings as many authentic work experiences to her classes as possible. Mackessy's students develop skills, such as writing cover letters, building resumes and budgeting money, that most young adults don't practice until high school or later. They also learn how to navigate college admissions, financial aid, GPAs and high school graduation requirements. Her students fill out college and job applications in class, make on-site visits to workplaces and are visited by directors from business and industry to learn first-hand what qualities employers look for and what different careers entail. Mackessy teaches work ethics by putting her students in the shoes of employees, having them clock in to class each day and penalizing tardiness.
Mackessy is a leader in her field and has presented at state and national conferences, served as conference coordinator for the Georgia Association of Career Educators for nine years and has held a leadership position at GACE since 2002. She has written unit and lesson plans that are shared statewide, and makes her class assignments available on her website for students and fellow educators. From 2007-2008, she headed a project to write career guidance performance standards for grades 6-8, and those standards have officially been adopted by the Georgia Department of Education. Her principal said of Mackessy, "When you combine her professional skills with her personal commitment to excellence, I think she serves as a shining example of what is best about our noble profession."
