  • A Summer of Learning and Leaving My Comfort Zone

This summer has been an enjoyable one, albeit a stretch for this small town girl. The Practitioner-in-Residence program has provided a valuable experience to me and one that I can share with the students and staff I work with. Originally I planned to stay for an extended period of time at ACTE Headquarters; however, work and family obligations required me to switch gears and plan for 7–10 day visits each month. I am continuing to work on projects while at home but am finding it is much easier to stay on task at the ACTE office.

  • Reflections on Professional Development

Professional development for educators is not only a responsibility but more importantly a necessity of being a professional. In the ever-changing world of education, teacher professional development is a means to enhance educational effectiveness. Research in education has shown that the quality of the teacher is the most important factor in raising student achievement. Surely parents overwhelmingly agree that they want the best teacher possible in every classroom. In my opinion, professional development is an integral factor in making educators the best they can be, which in turn will raise student achievement.

  • Build Relationships With Your Students on the First Day

One topic that ignites my passion is literacy. During my residency with ACTE I have developed several connections but one of the most enjoyable has been with USA TODAY Education. I have been writing for their CTE Teachers Lounge and Tip Jar. These sites have great ideas for your classroom and the latest buzz on topics in education.

  • Begin With the End in Mind

Struggling readers often find themselves far behind their classmates. Due to the fact that the difficulty of school reading material has increased faster than their ability, they find themselves frustrated, and in turn give up on the reading assignment and associate the activity with failure. However, frustration can be just as detrimental to an advanced reader who is not challenged by but bored with a reading assignment.

  • Teaching for Student Success

We’re well into the new school year and teachers are feeling the heat to improve student achievement. History tells us that we must prepare for the future. If what we are doing isn’t working to achieve our goals, then we must look at ourselves and decide to make changes within us—our teaching styles—instead of blaming our students. Our students are our stakeholders and just like a corporation, we need to meet the needs of our stakeholders and customers if we want education to prosper. How do you plan on thriving this year?
