This summer has been an enjoyable one, albeit a stretch for this small town girl. The Practitioner-in-Residence program
has provided a valuable experience to me and one that I can share with
the students and staff I work with. Originally I planned to stay for an
extended period of time at ACTE Headquarters; however, work and family
obligations required me to switch gears and plan for 7–10 day visits
each month. I am continuing to work on projects while at home but am
finding it is much easier to stay on task at the ACTE office.

Professional development for educators is
not only a responsibility but more importantly a necessity of being a
professional. In the ever-changing world of education, teacher
professional development is a means to enhance educational
effectiveness. Research in education has shown that the quality of the
teacher is the most important factor in raising student achievement.
Surely parents overwhelmingly agree that they want the best teacher
possible in every classroom. In my opinion, professional development is
an integral factor in making educators the best they can be, which in
turn will raise student achievement.

Last week I continued to work on the ACTE
Vice President How-to Guide and the “Featured ACTE Award Winner”
segment for the Web site, in addition to participating in the Leadership
Task Force conference call. Reviewing the results and comments from the
State Association Survey was an interesting read!

Sturgis Brown High School is gearing up for the third week of school,
and I must admit, it is great to be back in the swing of things! Our
three days of in-service focused on the Boys Town Model for a
well-managed classroom, project-based learning activities, department
meetings, meeting the new superintendent and an open house for incoming
freshmen. My Culinary Arts class is full and the youth internship
students are getting hands-on learning in their prospective career
