In blog posts this week on the Department of Education’s Homeroom blog, career and technical education took a front and center role as a great example of initiatives by high schools to improve student performance. These blogs are part of a series pushing President Obama’s high school redesign initiative, a proposal for a new competitive program to “encourage school districts to… focus on providing rigorous real-world experiences to students that will put them on a path for succes in both college and careers.”

Young adults who characterize themselves as developing 21st century skills often during their last year of education are more than twice as likely to say that they have a high-quality job in which they are successful and valued, according to a Gallup poll.

Much recent debate has focused on community college improvement as part
of the nation's push toward increasing postsecondary credentials.
Community college advocates are taking different approaches to reform,
some from the level of federal and state policy and funding, some from
the perspective of on-the-ground school reforms.

opportunity to participate in the Healthy Schools Campaign's "Cooking up Change" national finals this week in Washington, DC.

In an op-ed article for WPRO 99.7 FM radio station in Rhode Island, Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI), co-chair of the Congressional CTE Caucus, touted the importance of CTE programs as an effective method to “educate and train a workforce capable of filling 21st century jobs.” He also used the article to announce new legislation to strengthening comprehensive career and academic counseling services for students.

Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee ESEA reauthorization bill, the Strengthening America’s Schools Act (S. 1094), makes a better attempt to prepare students to be college- and career-ready than other proposals we have seen in the past, but it still falls short of truly preparing our students to be career ready.
