  • Congress Moves Closer to a Budget Deal

    The budget conference committee is continuing its efforts to craft a compromise FY 2014 budget plan before the self-imposed deadline of December 13. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), the conference chairs, are reportedly moving closer to a deal that could be announced early next week.

    The House Committee on Education and the Workforce held a hearing on strengthening the Pell grant program. This hearing was the eleventh in a series of hearings on reauthorizing the Higher Education Act (HEA).

  • Slipping PISA Scores Speak to Need for Applied Skills

    The United States has fallen farther behind its fellow OECD countries in the performance of 15-year-olds on reading, science and math assessments. American 15-year-olds ranked 17th in reading, 21st in science and 26th in mathematics among the 34 OECD countries in the 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

  • Project-based Learning Supports Women in STEM

    A survey of alumni from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts, which features a project-based curriculum, explored the long-term impacts of project-based learning. For each of the 39 impact areas assessed, women in particular reported that project-based learning had positively impacted their success. This adds to a growing body of research that project-based learning, a key component of CTE, may help to recruit and retain women into STEM fields.

  • Hill Staff Visit CTE School

    Staff members of the House of Representatives toured Arlington Career Center in Arlington, VA today to see a real CTE school in action as they work to reauthorize the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. The visit was organized by ACTE and the National Association of State Directors of CTE (NASDCTEc).
