  • Education and Job Training Highlighted in State of the Union

    Last night, President Obama delivered the annual State of the Union address before Congress. He put forward a broad policy agenda that included efforts on skills training, manufacturing and education. The president applauded the 2014 budget agreement that rolled back much of the 2013 sequester cut and paved the way for an increase in Perkins funding in the recent omnibus appropriations bill.

  • More Data Emerges on Non-degree Credentials

    A new publication from the federal Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 tracks the attainment of a variety of credentials, including undergraduate certificates, as well as workforce participation and earnings.

  • Research Round-up: Early Colleges, I-BEST, Earnings by Major

    An update of an American Institutes for Research study on Early College High Schools, which added an extra year of data to the previously published analysis, finds that 81 percent of Early College students had enrolled in postsecondary education, compared to 72 percent of their peers not in Early College High Schools. In addition, within the two years following high school, 23 percent of Early College students had received an associate degree, compared to just 2 percent of other students.

  • Baldwin Introduces GREEN Act in Senate

    Recently, Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) introduced the Grants for Renewable Energy Education for the Nation (GREEN) Act (S. 1952). The bill is a companion to the House GREEN Act sponsored by Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-CA). Sen. Baldwin publicly announced the Senate GREEN Act during a tour of technical colleges across Wisconsin.

  • White House Hosts Summit on College Opportunity

    On January 16, President Obama hosted a group of approximately 140 college presidents, business people, foundation heads and nonprofit executives at an event focusing on improving college access for low-income students.

  • Senate Approves Perkins Increase

    The FY 2014 omnibus appropriations bill cleared the Senate last night on a bipartisan vote of 72-26. As we previously reported, the House overwhelming approved the funding measure, including a $53 million increase for Perkins, earlier this week.

  • A Quarter of Americans Have an Alternative Credential

    According to a new U.S. Census report, in fall 2012, about 25 percent, or more than 50 million U.S. adults, held a professional certification, license or educational certificate.

  • House Passes FY 14 Omnibus Bill With Perkins Increase; Senate to Vote Soon

    The FY 2014 omnibus appropriations bill passed overwhelmingly on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday by a vote of 359-67. As we previously reported, the omnibus bill includes a $53 million increase for Perkins! The Senate is expected to vote on the measure before the end of the week. Please take a few minutes to reach out to your Senators and urge them to vote YES on this bill.
