113th Congress Begins and Committee Assignments Finalized

The 113th Congress officially began at noon yesterday with the swearing in of the House of Representatives and Senate. Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) was re-elected as Speaker of the House with Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) selected as Minority Leader for the Democrats. A full breakdown of all the congressional leadership positions, including committee chairs, can be found on the House and Senate web sites.

Yesterday also marked the finalization of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce’s membership list. On the Republican side, three members will be departing the committee: Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Rep. Richard Hanna (R-NY), and Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD). Joining the Republicans are four veteran representatives  and three newly elected members:

On the Democratic side of the committee, six members were added to replace retiring members. While none of the six members were newly elected in 2012, three have previously served on the committee and one is a former educator:

In the Senate, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) was appointed ranking member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee to replace term limited Sen. Michael Enzi (R-WY). A finalized member list of the HELP committee has yet to be released or posted on its web site.
