The House Education and the Workforce Committee held a field hearing in Mesa, AZ featuring two panels with witnesses coming from four- and two-year public postsecondary institutions, for-profit postsecondary institutions, local government and business and industry. The focus of the hearing was the role partnerships between business and industry and education institutions play in ensuring career training programs are aligned to industry needs and students are able to find employment.

The House Education and the Workforce Committee held a hearing in Las Vegas, NV to discuss the Perkins CTE Act reauthorization and CTE's benefits to students and employers. The hearing focused primarily on CTE funding and connecting CTE programs with business and industry and between secondary and postsecondary institutions.

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce held its second hearing on reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. While the first hearing back in September offered a general overview of how current law is working for states and local school districts, yesterday’s hearing focused on more specific areas of reform.

This week, the bipartisan
Congressional CTE Caucus held a briefing for congressional staffers to discuss Perkins
reauthorization from the perspective of different CTE stakeholders. ACTE has organized a CTE
school visit for congressional staff later this month at the Arlington Career
Center in Arlington, VA. Additionally, the House
Education and the Workforce Committee will hold its
second reauthorization hearing on Tuesday, November 19.

President Barack Obama visited Brooklyn’s Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-Tech) last Friday to tour the school and deliver remarks on the “Next Generation of Middle Class American Workers and Entrepreneurs." His remarks included priorities for preparing all students to be college and career ready, including career education.

October 10, AFT President Randi Weingarten addressed an audience of CTE
advocates at a United Federation of Teachers meeting in New York, calling for
high-quality CTE as a way to retool schools and focus students on today's
needed careers. She said policymakers need to fully fund the Perkins Act and
voiced strong opposition to proposals that would redirect federal Perkins
formula funds to competitive grants.
