Today\u2019s CTE prepares students for college AND further education through pathways that enable learners to meet their goals in a variety of high-wage, in-demand career areas.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of Americans realize CTE is a pathway to a successful future (<a href=\"https:\/\/hunt-institute.org\/resources\/2024\/11\/bipartisan-education-policies-priorities-survey\/\">Hunt Institute<\/a>). However, misconceptions and stigma remain.<\/p>\n<h4>Busting CTE Myths<\/h4>\n<table class=\"no-border\" cellspacing=\"10\" cellpadding=\"20\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 666px;\" colspan=\"1\"><strong>Myth<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 666px;\" colspan=\"1\"><strong>Reality<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\u2718 CTE is for low-performing students.<\/td>\n<td>\u2713 CTE programs are academically rigorous and aligned to college and career readiness standards, with 97% of CTE students graduating high school (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800080;\"><a style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/cte.ed.gov\/pcrn\/profile\/national\/performance\/2023\/population\/summary\/met\/secondary\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Department of Education<\/a><\/span>).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\u2718 CTE is for students not going to college.<\/td>\n<td><em><strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 Students who take CTE courses are more likely to attend a two-year college and equally likely as their peers to attend a four-year college (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800080;\"><a style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/cteresearchnetwork.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-11\/CTE-ResSynthInfog-508.pdf\">CTE Research Network<\/a><\/span>).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\u2718 CTE is the same as job training.<\/td>\n<td><em><strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 CTE programs are about exploring careers, gaining real-world experience, and building academic and technical knowledge and skills that become more targeted over time.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\u2718 CTE is only about the skilled trades.<\/td>\n<td><em><strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 CTE programs prepare students for careers not only in manufacturing, construction and transportation but also in health care, IT, arts and media, business, education and much more.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\u2718 Employers don\u2019t care about CTE experience or credentials.<\/td>\n<td><em><strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 More than three-quarters of employers from in-demand industries report hiring an employee for their CTE knowledge and skills\u00a0<u>(<span style=\"color: #800080;\"><a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/careertech.org\/resource\/shifting-the-skills-conversation-employer-attitudes-and-outcomes-of-career-technical-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advance CTE<\/a><\/span><\/u>) while a growing number of job postings ask for short-term credentials (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800080;\"><a style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/fedcommunities.org\/short-term-credentials-labor-market-who-stands-benefit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fed Communities<\/a><\/span>).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\u2718 CTE programs and institutions contribute little to the economy.<\/td>\n<td><em><strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 CTE generates positive returns to state and local economies. For instance, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System contributes $3.9 billion annually in added income to the state\u2019s economy (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800080;\"><a style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/kctcs.edu\/economic-impact\/\">KCTCS<\/a><\/span>) while CTE programs in Oklahoma generate nearly $1 billion per year (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800080;\"><a style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/oklahoma.gov\/content\/dam\/ok\/en\/careertech\/about\/reports\/economic-impact-study.pdf\">OK CareerTech<\/a><\/span>).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n    <\/div>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\n\n<section id=\"row-block_18a459642c36114c3f45be44ea1d1387\" class=\"accordion-and-image\">\r\n  <div class=\"content-area\">\r\n\r\n            <div class=\"title-area text-center\">\r\n                            <h2>Learner Groups Who Particularly Benefit from CTE<\/h2>\r\n            \r\n                            <p>CTE has statistically significant positive impacts on academic achievement, employability skills, high school completion and college readiness \u2013 for all learners (<a href=\"https:\/\/cteresearchnetwork.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-11\/CTE-ResSynthInfog-508.pdf\">CTE Research Network<\/a>). card-body\">\r\n                                                                                            <p><ul>\n<li>Students with disabilities in CTE programs are more likely to graduate on-time (<a href=\"https:\/\/gpl.gsu.edu\/download\/graduation-college-and-employment-outcomes-for-cte-students-with-an-identified-disability-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia Policy Labs<\/a>) and earn industry-recognized credentials (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/324993317_The_Impact_of_Career_and_Technical_Education_on_Students_With_Disabilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dougherty, Grindal &amp; Hehir 2018<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>CTE concentrators with disabilities are more likely to be employed full-time after high school than other students with disabilities (<a href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=EJ1093654\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lee, Rojewski &amp; Gregg 2016<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/p>\r\n                                                                            <p><ul>\n<li>Boys are more likely to concentrate in CTE (<a href=\"https:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/migrated\/rel\/regions\/midwest\/pdf\/REL_2021090.pdf\">REL Midwest<\/a>) and those who do have higher graduation rates (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w28790\">Brunner, Dougherty &amp; Ross 2021<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Young men engaged in CTE are more likely to enroll in two-year colleges (<a href=\"https:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/migrated\/rel\/regions\/midwest\/pdf\/REL_2021090.pdf\">REL Midwest<\/a>) and make higher wages (<a href=\"https:\/\/files.eric.ed.gov\/fulltext\/EJ1366813.pdf\">Olivera-Aguilar, Kell, Ezzo &amp; Robbins 2022<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Girls, on average, benefit equally from CTE and non-CTE programs (<a href=\"https:\/\/cteresearchnetwork.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-11\/CTE-ResSynthInfog-508.pdf\">CTE Research Network<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/p>\r\n
