Back from HOSA, Proud of Success

I have just recently returned from our HOSA National Leadership Conference held in Nashville,
Tennessee, on June 26-29.  My group included 18 students and five adults. Two of the adults are teachers with me at the JEL Career Center, and it was their first time attending.

Right away we started with student competition and opening general session. Our speaker at our opening session was Dr. Ben Carson, who was FABULOUS! He was both informative and motivating to all. I have never seen such rapt attention for a guest speaker before at HOSA. He had to engage over 7,500 students and advisers. No easy task.

The symposiums offered by HOSA were just as well done. I attended the HOSA 501 session, where we learned what was needed to be a Level 5 Leader. It was informative and interactive.

The vendors in the Exhibit Hall were informative as well. Represented were book vendors, jewelry vendors, fundraising vendors, as well as colleges and military.

Our closing session was rewarding as well for our state and for especially our school. We had a first place winner in Dental Assisting for postsecondary, two top 10 winners in our Home Health Aide competition in our secondary program, and a first and second place winner in Veterinary Science, with a third student taking fifth place. The Veterinary Science students were mine, and I was especially proud. They worked long and hard to accomplish that goal. It took me 12 years to get a student into the top three spots. Persistence is everything!
