Students are consultants asked to help a fictional factory that produces potato chips. The company is having financial trouble due to waste in the packing department. Students must find the most feasible, inexpensive means of packaging the product to ensure safe delivery. Secondary.
 
Can you build the tallest structure?
Students use 3 sheets of plain white paper, one meter of tape and scissors to construct the tallest structure possible. Middle school, secondary.
 
Career Research Project
Students identify a career of interest, research it, interview someone currently employed in that position, shadow someone currently employed in that position, and create a brochure or presentation. Secondary.
 
Cereal for all
Students take a cereal box apart to determine the total surface area of the box and how much material is needed to create the box. Secondary.
 
Friction Lab
Students play the role of a lab technician for a company that manufactures outdoor patio coverings, and they must determine the “slipperiness” of your company’s product by determining the coefficient of friction of each sample provided in both wet and dry conditions. Secondary.
 
House for Sale
Students learn to design and measure a house they will build, then advertise it showing a floor plan. Middle school, secondary.

Students learn about housing and real estate. Secondary.

The students will be excused from school one day to go shadow someone in a working environment.
 
Rocket Lab
Students are writerw for a consumer report type magazine. Their task is to evaluate a model rocket given you for ease of assembly and performance. Teams assemble and launch the rocket and calculate the acceleration, maximum speed and maximum altitude of the rocket. Secondary.
