ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announces that Maemij Ribeiro of Elmwood Park, Ill., and Catherine Maloney of Hattiesburg, Miss., have been selected to receive ACTE’s 2006 Who’s Who Among American High School Students scholarship. Each student will receive $1,000 to use toward continuing her education.
Ribeiro, a student at Trinity High School, plans to study electrical engineering at Marquette University. When asked about her education and career goals, Ribeiro stated, “My belief that I can do anything I set my mind to has influenced me to set goals for myself, which I hope will help me in college to do well in my earning a diploma in electrical engineering and maybe architectural engineering and to be in the top percent of my class. I also hope to work with a major company, helping to forward technology.”
Maloney, a student at Oak Grove High School, was asked what she planned to study. “At this time I am interested in the field of architecture. Engineering also sounds interesting to me, so I need to investigate both areas more seriously.”
Both students earned well above a 3.5 cumulative grade point average while participating in several school sponsored activities including National Honor Society and French Club. In addition to their many school related activities, the students put in several hours of volunteer work and worked a few hours a week at a part-time job.
ACTE partnered with Who’s Who Among American High School Students in order to provide career and technical education students an additional opportunity to be recognized nationally for their hard work and achievement.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, students are required to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater and must be nominated by an advisor who is an ACTE member. Information concerning ACTE’s 2007 Who’s Who Among American High School Students scholarship will be available in the fall on ACTE’s web site at www.acteonline.org.
The Association for Career and Technical Education is the national professional association for the field of career and technical education. ACTE’s membership is composed of teachers, counselors and administrators at the middle school, high school and postsecondary levels.
