ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announces that Qing Fan of Staten Island, New York and Bobbie Copas of Sallisaw, Oklahoma have been selected as the winners of the 2007 Cliff Weiss Memorial Essay Contest.

The essay contest was developed in the memory of former ACTE Senior Director of Communications, Cliff Weiss (1951-2004). Cliff Weiss had a passion for career and technical education, which he showcased through his writing. The purpose of this contest is to recognize career and technical education (CTE) students who share the same passion and talents.

Students enrolled in both secondary and postsecondary CTE courses were asked, “How will what you learned in CTE help the American economy in five years?” A winner from the secondary and postsecondary category was selected from hundreds of entries by a panel of judges.

Fan, a student at Port Richmond High School, won the secondary category, and Copas, a student at Indian Capital Technology Center, was selected for the postsecondary category. Both winners will receive an award of $250, and their essays will be published in the May edition of ACTE’s Techniques Magazine and on ACTE’s Web site.

The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) is the nation’s largest not-for-profit education association dedicated to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for successful careers. It provides advocacy, public awareness and access to information, professional development and tools that enable members to be successful and effective leaders. Founded in 1926, ACTE has more than 29,000 members including teachers, counselors and administrators at the middle school, high school and postsecondary levels.
