ACTE Cliff Weiss Essay Winners Announced

ALEXANDRIA, VA- The Association for Career and Technical Education announced today that Spencer Terry of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, won the secondary category and Carrie Snyder-Renfro of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, won the postsecondary category for the 2008 Cliff Weiss Essay contest. The winning essays will be published in the September issue of Techniques magazine and the winners will each receive $250.

Terry was enrolled in the Business Management/Entrepreneurship class at Tulsa Technology Center, located in Tulsa, and graduated in May from Broken Arrow High School in the top 15 percent of his class. During the 2008 state DECA conference, his group placed second in the entrepreneurship event and placed in the top 20 at DECA Internationals in Atlanta. DECA is an international association of high school and college students studying marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality and marketing sales and service. He serves as the Oklahoma DECA state reporter. Terry will start at Tulsa Community College this fall, and he plans to transfer to the University of Tulsa and major in International Business.

Snyder-Renfro is currently attending the University of Central Oklahoma to earn a degree in Career and Technical Education. She is a Hospitality, Management and Culinary Arts & Science Instructor for Oklahoma Centennial High School and Platt College. She is a Certified Master Baker and Working Pastry Chef and is working on becoming a Certified Executive Pastry Chef. Snyder-Renfro is involved in campus ministry to young adults and women and international hospitality for the state of Oklahoma.

The Cliff Weiss Essay contest is in memory of former ACTE Senior Director of Communications Cliff Weiss (1951-2004).
