ACTE Announces New York Recruitment and Retention Specialist as National Award Finalist

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Terry Hughes, Agricultural Education Recruitment and Retention Specialist at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, as the recipient of the 2018 ACTE Region I Lifetime Achievement Award. This award recognizes CTE professionals for their leadership on behalf of ACTE, their innovations in CTE and their contributions to the field over an extended period of time.

Hughes has brought significant CTE leadership to the industry, he was elected by his SUNY Cobleskill College colleagues as the agricultural engineering department chair and elected as the college’s representative to the SUNY University Faculty Senate where he became the state program and awards committee chair. Hughes has served as chapter advisor, state leader, and on the board of directors for the National Postsecondary Agricultural Student Organization.

His service continued as the regional secretary and vice president of the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE). During his time on the NAAE Board of Directors, the organization forged a new, stronger relationship with ACTE which resulted in the two organizations combining their national conventions.

He went on to serve on both the national FFA Board of Directors and on the national FFA Foundation Board of Trustees. Hughes utilized this national experience by joining a group CTE leaders who were committed to strengthen ACTE in New York.

Hughes is one of 5 finalists for the 2019 national title. The national winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Banquet, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event will take place on Wednesday evening, November 28, during ACTE’s CareerTech VISION 2018 in San Antonio, TX. The Awards Banquet is sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, the US Army, CareerSafe, and Stratasys. For more information about the ACTE Excellence Awards, visit our webpage.
