ACTE Announces Indiana Professor as National Award Finalist

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Dr. James P. Greenan, Professor and Chair of Career and Technical Education, Director of the Leadership Deveopment Program at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, as the 2018 ACTE Region III Postsecondary Teacher of The Year. This award recognizes the finest career and technical teachers at the postsecondary level who have demonstrated innovation in the classroom, commitment to their students and dedication to the improvement of CTE in their institution and communities.

Dr. Greenan’s research began in the 1970s. Following his initial five years of curriculum research, he discovered that the concept of “generalizable skills.” Dr. Greenan explained that generalizable skills were basic to, necessary for success in, and transferable across educational programs and careers in the workforce.

Dr. Greenan also developed and validated authentic assessment strategies and procedures with which to measure students’ generalizable skills in various contexts, and special education programs. The curriculum and instruction materials have been widely available in the public domain and used by students and teachers in classrooms and research studies extensively both across the nation and internationally.

Additionally, he has created an undergraduate/graduate course entitled, “Generalizable Skills Instruction in Career and Technical Education” at Purdue University. Generalizable skills instruction in CTE has become an integrated focus in his discovery, teaching, and engagement work with K–12 classrooms and in the workplace.

Dr. Greenan is one of 5 finalists for the 2019 national title. The national winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Banquet, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event will take place on Wednesday evening, November 28, during ACTE’s CareerTech VISION 2018 in San Antonio, TX.
