ACTE Announces New Jersey Teacher of Agri-Science as National Award Finalist

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Deanna Miller, Agri-Science Teacher at Woodstown Pilesgrove Regional School District in Woodstown, as the 2018 ACTE Region I New Teacher of the Year. This award recognizes new CTE teachers who have made significant contributions toward innovative and unique career and technical education programs and shown a professional commitment early in their careers.

Miller has worked hard to build a high-quality CTE program at Woodstown Pilesgrove Regional School District. She has implemented and strengthened course sequencing and strived to obtain the needed certifications to teach the CASE curriculum to ensure that her program is operating with the most relevant material. Miller also utilizes the CASE third-party assessments to evaluate student growth and achievement within the program, the use of which allows her to adjust her teaching as needed to heighten student achievement.

Miller has made efforts to increase her students’ career success through 100 percent implementation of supervised agricultural experience (SAE) projects. Every one of her students is required to keep a journal and financial records, when applicable, on their SAE project.

As the FFA advisor at Woodstown High School, Miller has worked with the local Grange to develop a partnership to bring the two organizations together, to grow and support one another in the areas of membership, leadership, and community service and support.

Miller is one of 5 finalists for the 2019 national title. The national winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Banquet, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event will take place on Wednesday evening, November 28, during ACTE’s CareerTech VISION 2018 in San Antonio, TX. The Awards Banquet is sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, the US Army, CareerSafe, and Stratasys. For more information about the ACTE Excellence Awards, visit our webpage.
