I have had the pleasure and privilege over the past several months to travel across this country and participate in many of the ACTE state association and regional conferences. It was a rewarding experience for me to meet and talk with so many career and technical education professionals and to share with them news about ACTE, our legislative activities and changes we see on the horizon.
One of the truly exciting findings on my trips was to find so many passionate and actively involved leaders on the state level. It is through the unwavering energy, effort and dedication of these individuals that our profession continues to provide value to all the lives it touches.
It is critical, as we move forward into this century of never-ending change and uncertainty, that the notion of serving and giving-which is leadership at its best-be preserved. As we grapple with harnessing new technology, understanding changing demographics and new economies, and adding our voice to the legislative process, tomorrow's leaders must focus on the possibilities, while honoring the traditions and values that we hold dear.
Leaders must have the courage to find a new perspective-to think one step beyond and ask not "why"?but "why not"? They must look at the ordinary, but see the extraordinary. Leaders are the engine for creative change.
Leaders possess values. Leaders are individuals with vision. They are people with commitment, passion and conviction. Leaders pursue their goals in order to achieve their vision with an intensity that is unstoppable. Leaders want to serve.
The very essence of leadership has always been the initiative to show the way for others, based on the desire to serve. Ego, self-fulfillment, monetary rewards or recognition do not drive the true leader. True leaders are driven to serve. A leader initiates, provides the ideas and the structure, and takes the risk of failure along with the chance of success.
Leaders persevere through both good times and challenging ones. They concentrate on what they want to have happen. Leaders must also have integrity and the capability to mentor young and aspiring leadership talent. Without a vision, integrity and courage, there is no leadership?only empty phrases. True leaders think beyond the stars and visualize the end game.
ACTE is blessed to have scores of leaders across this country. I encourage all members to support them and thank them. Finally, I encourage you to share your passion, talents and courage with ACTE and become a leader.
