ALEXANDRIA, VA - The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) and its Board of Directors announce the 2015 ACTE Business of the Year, Emerson Climate Technologies based in Sidney, Ohio. The ACTE Business of the Year award celebrates businesses and organizations that have demonstrated their commitment to career and technical education (CTE) through their partnership and staunch support of CTE professionals.

For the past 17 years, Emerson Climate Technologies has partnered with regional career and technical schools to provide equipment, funding, and marketing support for programs that prepare the next generation of industry workers in the heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) sector. Emerson Climate Technologies is a business of St. Louis-based Emerson Electric, a $25 billion manufacturing/engineering company. Headquartered in Sidney Ohio, Emerson Climate Technologies is highly involved in the region, providing substantial financial and human resources to the Upper Valley Career Center, Edison Community College, Shelby County K-12 districts, area hospitals and non-profit agencies.

Emerson Climate Technology partners with the Upper Valley Career Center's HVACR program, which has received national industry recognition and averages an enrollment of 34 students per year with a 92 percent placement rate. Emerson Climate Technologies provided a $200,000 grant to the program to support equipment purchases and instructor professional development and has also donated numerous pieces of equipment throughout the years. This support has contributed to a state-of-the-art, nationally recognized HVACR lab that facilitates student training on the latest equipment. In addition, Emerson Climate staff serve on the school's HVACR advisory committee (which meets at least bi-annually) and attend "explore careers days" for secondary students as well as year-round open houses. During these events, staff welcome visitors and educate students and parents about the forecasted need and high-paying, valued careers that are available for trained professionals in the HVACR industry.

Emerson identified the need for students to receive a postsecondary technician's certificate to further prepare potential future employees, and under its leadership developed an articulation agreement between the Upper Valley Career Center and Edison Community College. As a result, beginning in the summer of 2013, high school graduates of the HVACR program are able to earn the technician's certification in less than one year.

The ACTE Excellence Awards promote excellence in CTE by recognizing individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the community, programs that exemplify the highest standards and organizations that have conducted activities to promote and expand CTE programs. Award winners will be honored for their contributions to CTE at the annual ACTE Awards Banquet during ACTE's CareerTech VISION 2014 in Nashville, Tennessee on November 19, 2014. CareerTech VISION is ACTE's signature event, with more than 3,500 attendees, career and CTE professionals from across the country and more than 200 workshops and sessions dedicated to improving the knowledge and capacity of CTE leaders.
