ACTE Announces Indiana Professor as National Award Finalist

ALEXANDRIA, VA—The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announces Edward Lazaros, professor at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, as the 2016 Region III Postsecondary Teacher of the Year. This award recognizes career and technical teachers and teacher educators who have demonstrated excellence and best practices in career and technical education at the postsecondary level.

Edward J. Lazaros is a professor in the Department of Technology at Ball State University, where he serves as program director and advisor for the Master of Arts in CTE and the advisor for the Director of CTE licensure pattern. In these roles, he has grown the Master of Arts in CTE into the third largest program out of seven in the department. His program was ranked in 2014 as the nation’s 11th “Best Buy” among U.S. online Masters in Education degrees for its high quality and affordability, and number one in CTE by GetEducated.com, a consumer advocacy group.

In 2011, Lazaros was tapped to coordinate a project through the Indiana Department of Education to provide teacher training for Indiana’s Workplace Specialist-licensed teachers. His involvement over the last five years has brought consistency, stability and high standards to that program, which has guided 516 Workplace Specialist I teachers throughout Indiana to earn their teaching licenses.

Scholarship is an area where Lazaros has been prolific: he has 80 published refereed articles in widely circulated professional journals read by CTE teachers; 79 refereed presentations at state, national, and international professional organization conferences; and 14 funded external grants totaling over $560,000.  He helped develop the CTE Journal, a refereed publication that is a source of pride for Indiana ACTE that has become a valuable resource for the CTE community. Lazaros has worked closely with the leaders at Indiana ACTE to strengthen postsecondary participation in the organization and their annual conference programming. “Dr. Lazaros brings the scholarly, research- and evidence-based perspective to that team,” says Peggy Wild, State Director of CTE for Indiana. “[He] is clearly a value added element to Indiana CTE.”

Lazaros is one of five finalists for the 2017 national title. The national winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Banquet, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event will take place on Wednesday evening, November 30, during ACTE’s CareerTech VISION 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Awards Banquet is sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, the US Army, CareerSafe, Certiport, Stratasys, and International Baccalaureate.
