The SDACTE Conference
was once again an opportunity for learning, catching up with old
friends while making new friends, and getting rejuvenated and ready for

Professional development for educators is
not only a responsibility but more importantly a necessity of being a
professional. In the ever-changing world of education, teacher
professional development is a means to enhance educational
effectiveness. Research in education has shown that the quality of the
teacher is the most important factor in raising student achievement.
Surely parents overwhelmingly agree that they want the best teacher
possible in every classroom. In my opinion, professional development is
an integral factor in making educators the best they can be, which in
turn will raise student achievement.

Last week I continued to work on the ACTE
Vice President How-to Guide and the “Featured ACTE Award Winner”
segment for the Web site, in addition to participating in the Leadership
Task Force conference call. Reviewing the results and comments from the
State Association Survey was an interesting read!

One topic that ignites my passion is
literacy. During my residency with ACTE I have developed several
connections but one of the most enjoyable has been with USA TODAY
Education. I have been writing for their CTE Teachers Lounge and Tip Jar. These sites have great ideas for your classroom and the latest buzz on topics in education.

Sturgis Brown High School is gearing up for the third week of school,
and I must admit, it is great to be back in the swing of things! Our
three days of in-service focused on the Boys Town Model for a
well-managed classroom, project-based learning activities, department
meetings, meeting the new superintendent and an open house for incoming
freshmen. My Culinary Arts class is full and the youth internship
students are getting hands-on learning in their prospective career

Literacy is an essential skill needed to be successful in education, the
workforce and life in general. As educators, we strive to prepare our
students to become successful and productive members of society. Surely,
reading and writing are vital parts of this process.
