CTE Month and Policymaker Outreach

Happy CTE Month! I hope that your celebration of the CTE community’s successes is off to a great start. For readers that may not be familiar with CTE Month, every February ACTE encourages our members and other CTE advocates to raise awareness in their communities about CTE programs and the benefits that these programs provide to our nation’s students, workforce, and economy. Learn more about how you can get involved here.

An important part of making CTE Month a success is engaging with policymakers in your community to ensure that they understand what CTE is and the role it plays in preparing students for success in today’s workforce. CTE has been a major topic of discussion among policymakers in recent weeks, from the President’s State of the Union address to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s article in today’s OCTAE Connection on the importance of CTE Month and Perkins Act reauthorization.

ACTE staff work tirelessly to educate policymakers and advocate for CTE at the federal level. However, there is enormous value in working with your local government leaders to spread the word about CTE, and CTE Month is a great time to do it. ACTE has a number of resources to aid you in your efforts, including our Advocacy Toolkit, fact sheets and a sample proclamation that you can update for your local leaders to formally recognize February as CTE Month. Elected officials at the local and state level often want to learn more about what they can do to help build their economy and provide students with fulfilling career opportunities, and CTE Month is a great opportunity to reach out to them for an informational meeting or to invite them to attend your planned events.

If you have questions about how you can connect with your local policy leaders, don’t hesitate to contact an ACTE staff member – and send us your success stories!
