Department of Education Releases Perkins State Table for 2014

Recently, the U.S. Department of Education released a new state-by-state table that shows Perkins funding in Fiscal Year (FY) 2014. The table shows state allocations beginning in FY 2012 and reflects the FY 2013 sequester cut, as well as the recent increase in Perkins funding for the current fiscal year. The FY 2014 omnibus appropriations bill, which was recently signed into law by President Obama, included a $53 million increase for Perkins! The funding boost for Perkins will restore over 90 percent of the cut to Perkins state grants that occurred in 2013 as a result of sequestration.

Because of the overall increase in Perkins funds, the FY 2014 Perkins allocation for many states will be higher than the amount received in FY 2013. Other states will continue to receive their minimum allocation provided under current law through the “hold harmless” provision of the Perkins Act, which links funding to 1998 levels. States that did not receive an increase either did not receive a cut due to sequester in FY 13, or in rare cases, have now had their formula-driven allocation reduced to hold harmless levels as a result of demographic changes. The difference in increases among states generally relates to how large the original cut to the state funding was in FY 13, along with shifts in population and per-capita-income that have occurred over the last two years. The entire state-by-state Perkins funding table is available here.
