Powering Veterans' Careers: Troops to Energy Jobs Initiative

After two years of learning what does and doesn't work, the Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD) is sharing lessons from its Troops to Energy Jobs Initiative through an online toolkit.

The Troops to Energy Jobs program, in collaboration with six utility companies-Dominion, AEP, APS, National Grid, PG&E Corporation and Southern Company-helps veterans figure out how their military skills and experience translate into what energy companies are looking for; offers support to help veterans gain additional knowledge and skills for employment in energy; and allows utilities to identify qualified veterans as employees.

The toolkit outlines how to prepare, build, implement and measure a successful Troops to Energy Jobs program. For instance, through community college-based and nonprofit organization programs that run from several weeks to several months in length, PG&E's PowerPathway program offers veterans the opportunity to train for a wide range of entry-level utility jobs, including jobs as utility workers, gas pipeline welders and electric technicians. The program provides technical training as well as pre-employment support.
