New NGA Chair Mary Fallin Proposes Education Initiative

On August 4, 2013, the National Governor’s Association (NGA) appointed Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin as its new Chair. After the announcement, Gov. Fallin introduced her 2013-14 NGA Chair’s Initiative called America Works: Education and Training for Tomorrow’s Jobs.

The initiative notes that the percentage of jobs which only require a high school diploma have dropped from 79% in 1964 to 41% in 2008. The plan aims to promote the importance of postsecondary education with a national event in Washington D.C. along with several regional roundtable discussions which are supposed to identify priorities for state action. The initiative will also aim to integrate education and work force data in order to sync education with the states labor needs.

“This nation must understand that a postsecondary degree or relevant workforce certificate is the “new minimum” and without it, our young people will not be able to access the middle class, the American dream and the opportunities and responsibilities of citizenship and a fuller life.”
