ACTE Submits Higher Ed Act Recommendations

ACTE Submits Higher Ed Act Recommendations

Last week, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce requested recommendations for reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA) from education stakeholder groups. The HEA is a collection of many programs designed to increase access and quality of higher education, including federal financial aid, teacher preparation and support services for low-income and first generation college students.

In response to the request, ACTE sent a letter of recommendations that followed four main ideas:

  1. Reduce barriers for CTE students in accessing financial aid and in making the transition from secondary education to postsecondary education and from one postsecondary program to another.
  2. Provide equal consideration of “non-traditional” students throughout the HEA, as compared to “traditional students.”
  3. Ensure data collected under this act is aligned across HEA programs as well as with data collected under other education and workforce legislation–ESEA, Perkins and the Workforce Investment Act.
  4. Ensure that CTE teacher preparation programs have access to the funds provided under Title II of the HEA.

These recommendations were developed through a survey of ACTE members. More detailed reauthorization priorities are currently in development, and will be shared through the CTE Policy Watch blog when available.
