Take Action: House Voting On Career Readiness Measure

Today the House of Representatives will be voting on amendments to the Student Success Act reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Rep. Dan Benishek (R-MI), in conjunction with ACTE, is introducing an amendment requesting schools report on the career readiness of its students.

Already collected under the Perkins Act, Rep. Benishek’s amendment would make these career readiness measures, such as credential and skill attainment, available on school report cards in addition to graduation rates required under current law.

To ensure this important amendment is adopted, we need you to reach out to your Representative and tell him or her to vote for Rep. Benishek’s career readiness amendment.

Phone Talking Points:

  • I am calling to urge [Insert your Member of Congress] to support the Benishek career readiness amendment to the Student Success Act.
  • The amendment encourages states to include the number of students attaining career and technical proficiencies in each public secondary schoolin the states’ annual report card.
  • These measures are currently collected and disaggregated under the Perkins Act and this amendment makes this information more easily accessible, allowing parents and students to make informed decisions when enrolling in schools and programs.
  • This amendment will also help policymakers, teachers and administrators to better understand the impact career readiness has on student performance, graduation and success in postsecondary education.
  • The amendment would not require additional costs or burdens on already cash-strapped school districts.

Education Leader George Miller to Retire

Rep. George Miller (D-CA), ranking member on the House Education and the Workforce Committee and winner of ACTE’s Policymaker of the Year Award, announced his retirement on Monday. He will not seek re-election in 2014.

House Passes FY 14 Omnibus Bill With Perkins Increase; Senate to Vote Soon

The FY 2014 omnibus appropriations bill passed overwhelmingly on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday by a vote of 359-67. As we previously reported, the omnibus bill includes a $53 million increase for Perkins! The Senate is expected to vote on the measure before the end of the week. Please take a few minutes to reach out to your Senators and urge them to vote YES on this bill.
