Take Action: House Voting On Career Readiness Measure

Today the House of Representatives will be voting on amendments to the Student Success Act reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Rep. Dan Benishek (R-MI), in conjunction with ACTE, is introducing an amendment requesting schools report on the career readiness of its students.

Already collected under the Perkins Act, Rep. Benishek’s amendment would make these career readiness measures, such as credential and skill attainment, available on school report cards in addition to graduation rates required under current law.

To ensure this important amendment is adopted, we need you to reach out to your Representative and tell him or her to vote for Rep. Benishek’s career readiness amendment.

Take Action:

  • Visit the CTE Action Center on the ACTE website to send an email, or
  • Call your Representative with the provided talking points (also reach them through the Capitol switchboard: 202-224-3121)

Phone Talking Points:

  • I am calling to urge [Insert your Member of Congress] to support the Benishek career readiness amendment to the Student Success Act.
  • The amendment encourages states to include the number of students attaining career and technical proficiencies in each public secondary schoolin the states’ annual report card.
  • These measures are currently collected and disaggregated under the Perkins Act and this amendment makes this information more easily accessible, allowing parents and students to make informed decisions when enrolling in schools and programs.
  • This amendment will also help policymakers, teachers and administrators to better understand the impact career readiness has on student performance, graduation and success in postsecondary education.
  • The amendment would not require additional costs or burdens on already cash-strapped school districts.

  • I ask that [Insert your Member of Congress] vote for the Benishek career readiness amendment.
