2013 College Grads Lack Writing, Applied Skills

Many organizations surveyed recently by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) reported they had yet to hire a 2013 college graduate, and 20 percent said it was because 2013 graduates were underqualified for job openings.

The employers surveyed by SHRM were mostly for-profit private companies, spanning many industry sectors. About half said that 2013 graduates with a bachelor's degree or higher lack writing skills, and 18 percent said graduates lack math skills. In addition, 50 percent of respondents believed that college graduates lack professionalism or work ethic, and about 30 percent believed graduates lack leadership, initiative and critical thinking/problem-solving skills.

In addition, employers reported that the most difficult-to-hire job categories were:

  • engineers
  • highly skilled technical staff, such as technicians and programmers
  • scientists
  • skilled tradespeople
  • managers and executives

CTE students learn to excel in many of the skills identified as lacking by employers, as they prepare for careers in these high-demand occupations.
