Grants Spur Workforce-Education Data Linkages

Last week the U.S. Department of Labor announced approximately $6 million in grants for the third round of the Workforce Data Quality Initiative. These funds will enable up to six additional states to build or expand longitudinal databases that connect education and workforce data. Grantees are expected to not only develop or expand their workforce longitudinal database but also to use that database to analyze state workforce and education systems and to create materials on state workforce performance to share with the public. Twenty-five states have been awarded grants during previous rounds.

Improving the data pipeline to follow students through their education and into the workforce is vital. ACTE is an active participant in several such initiatives, including:

  • The Workforce Data Quality Campaign has convened a group of workforce and education experts to recommend a range of federal and state policy reforms that promote the development of aligned education and workforce data systems
  • The State Perkins Accountability Congress, which includes secondary and postsecondary representatives from state CTE systems, is looking at workforce data's role in Perkins accountability
  • The Certification Data Exchange Project is piloting data sharing between industry certification organizations and state educational data systems.
