On April 9, the final
Next Generation Science Standards
were released. These standards, modeled after the Common Core State Standards
in English Language Arts and Mathematics, are touted as “voluntary,
rigorous, and internationally benchmarked standards for K-12 science education.”

On January 8, the second and final public draft of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) was released. Comment on the draft will be accepted until January 29 and the final standards are expected to be released in March.

The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc) and Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) have produced a joint statement to provide clarity regarding the meaning of College and Career Ready Determinations (CCRD) that were produced by PARCC in early November.

On November 2, The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), one of the two state-led consortia working to develop assessments aligned with the Common Core State Standards, unveiled its College- and Career-Ready Determinations (CCRD) policy and Policy-Level Descriptors (PLDs). The CCRD and PLDs, reported about in an earlier CTE Policy Watch blog post, establish a common benchmark to define the academic preparation in English Language Arts/literacy and mathematics which students will need to be college and career ready.

Since a lot of career and technical educators were out of school over the summer, it is worth repeating that ACTE and America’s Promise held a Webinar in June featuring the work of the Missouri Center for Career Education (MCCE). The Webinar and slides from the presentation can be viewed on the ACTE Common Core Web page. New materials were added to the MCCE website this month.

PARCC, one of the two consortia developing assessments linked to the Common Core State Standards, held a briefing on July 30 to update national organizations on their progress. The briefing included detail about a draft College-Ready Determinations (CRDs) Policy which is open for public comment until September 21.

On May 24, ACTE and the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc) partnered with Achieve on the release of a report providing a blueprint for increased engagement between state education leaders and the career and technical education (CTE) community.

The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), one of the Common Core assessment consortia, provides a number of ways that K-12 educators can get involved in the development of PARCC assessments.This summer 2012, PARCC will be launching an item review committee which is planning to engage with many educators at the state and local levels.
