  • Perkins Reauthorization Heats up in House Hearing

    The House Committee on Education and the Workforce held its second hearing on reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. While the first hearing back in September offered a general overview of how current law is working for states and local school districts, yesterday’s hearing focused on more specific areas of reform.

  • Perkins Reauthorization Moves Forward in the House with CTE Caucus Briefing, Committee Hearing and School Visit

    This week, the bipartisan Congressional CTE Caucus held a briefing for congressional staffers to discuss Perkins reauthorization from the perspective of different CTE stakeholders. ACTE has organized a CTE school visit for congressional staff later this month at the Arlington Career Center in Arlington, VA. Additionally, the House Education and the Workforce Committee will hold its second reauthorization hearing on Tuesday, November 19.

  • President Obama Visits CTE School

    President Barack Obama visited Brooklyn’s Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-Tech) last Friday to tour the school and deliver remarks on the “Next Generation of Middle Class American Workers and Entrepreneurs." His remarks included priorities for preparing all students to be college and career ready, including career education.

  • House Holds First Perkins Reauthorization Hearing

    The House officially kicked off its Perkins reauthorization process today with a hearing in the House Education and the Workforce’s Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education. The hearing was titled, “Preparing Today's Students for Tomorrow's Jobs: A Discussion on Career and Technical Education and Training Programs,” and focused on how effective CTE programs are meeting the needs of students and the economy.

  • House Launches Perkins Reauthorization With First Hearing

    The Perkins reauthorization process is about to officially begin on Capitol Hill! The House Education and the Workforce Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education has scheduled a Perkins hearing this Friday, September 20, at 10:00 a.m. The hearing is titled, "Preparing Today's Students for Tomorrow's Jobs: A Discussion on Career and Technical Education and Training Programs."

  • WIA Bill Impacts CTE Funding

    Yesterday, Sen. Patty Murray and Ranking Member Johnny Isakson of the Senate Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety introduced the bipartisan Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 2013 (S. 1356). The bill makes changes to the infrastructure funding mechanism of the One-Stop centers, which has ripple effects on Perkins funding.

  • Sen. Merkley Pens Middle School Career Exploration Bill

    Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) introduced the Building Understanding, Investment, Learning and Direction Career and Technical Education (BUILD CTE) Act of 2013 to establish a pilot, competitive grant program to help states establish, re-establish or scale up career exploration programs in middle schools.

  • Department of Education Eyes CTE for High School Redesign

    In blog posts this week on the Department of Education’s Homeroom blog, career and technical education took a front and center role as a great example of initiatives by high schools to improve student performance. These blogs are part of a series pushing President Obama’s high school redesign initiative, a proposal for a new competitive program to “encourage school districts to… focus on providing rigorous real-world experiences to students that will put them on a path for succes in both college and careers.”
