During 2013, Sen. Begich made CTE one of his top priorities by introducing a package of CTE initiatives including the Counseling for Career Choice Act.

The Department of Education (DOE) recently hosted several leaders from career and technical student organizations for a “Youth Voices” session with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as a component of its CTE Month celebrations in February. The Youth Voices sessions are designed to provide the Secretary and department staff with an opportunity to engage with students and solicit their input on existing and future policies and decisions.

Upon reading Michael J. Petrilli’s recent article, “Kid, I’m Sorry, but You’re Just Not College Material,” I was encouraged to see a major publication shining light on some of the many benefits that career and technical education (CTE) has to offer. However, there is a key point that my colleagues at the Association for Career and Technical Education I and feel is important to emphasize in this discussion: CTE is a component of academically challenging, rigorous education for all students, be they high-fliers or at-risk.

During a special event at the Capitol Visitors Center during ACTE’s recent National Policy Seminar, Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) accepted the 2013 ACTE Policymaker of the Year Award. This award is presented annually by association to recognize policymakers who have made a significant contribution to CTE policy in the past year.

The Department of Education recently proposed regulations on gainful employment requirements for postsecondary educational institutions offering federal financial aid for career training programs. This proposal comes nearly a year after a federal court struck down the department’s previous attempt to regulate gainful employment.

Throughout February, ACTE has worked with many Members of Congress to bring recognition and celebration to February 2014 as CTE Month.

Illinois’ Madison County Career and Technical Education System hosted a roundtable discussion with Reps. John Shimkus (R-IL) and Rodney Davis (R-IL) at Lewis and Clark Community College in Edwardsville, IL. The discussion aimed to bring attention to the ways in which career and technical education is preparing students for careers and further education in STEM fields.
