Yesterday, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed the
Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill. As we reported
earlier this week, the bill was given the green light from the appropriations
subcommittee on Tuesday and it is now ready to proceed to the Senate floor for
a vote there. Thanks to the efforts of the entire CTE community, the committee
approved a $1.1 billion funding level for Perkins! The across-the-board
sequester cut caused a $58 million reduction in Perkins for FY 2013, resulting
in less funding for high schools, CTE centers, community and technical colleges,
and millions of CTE students nationwide beginning in the 2013-14 school year. Thursday’s
vote marked a big step toward restoring this cut!

A new Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report
paints a mixed picture of postsecondary CTE in the United States,
praising CTE's flexibility, innovation and inclusion while citing
challenges that result from decentralization, such as uneven quality and
a lack of transparency and coherency that can affect student ability to
make informed choices.
