  • House of Representatives Holds First Education and Workforce Hearing of New Congress

    The House Committee on Education and the Workforce held the biennial first hearing of the new Congress yesterday. Titled “Challenges and Opportunities Facing America’s Schools and Workplaces,” the hearing was a general overview of the status of education and the workforce today, and where the committee should be focusing its efforts going forward. Members of the committee also used the time to stake out their positions for this legislative session.

  • Next-generation Science Standards Available for Final Review

    On January 8, the second and final public draft of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) was released. Comment on the draft will be accepted until January 29 and the final standards are expected to be released in March.

  • 113th Congress Begins and Committee Assignments Finalized

    The 113th Congress officially began at noon yesterday with the swearing in of the House of Representatives and Senate. Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) was re-elected as Speaker of the House with Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) selected as Minority Leader for the Democrats. A full breakdown of all the congressional leadership positions, including committee chairs, can be found on the House and Senate web sites.

  • Fiscal Cliff Averted ... for Now

    On January 1, the House passed on a 257-167 vote the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (H.R.8). The legislation affirms the Senate’s approval (89-8) of the fiscal cliff deal which came earlier in the day. However, the legislation only temporarily shelves the across-the-board sequester budget cuts until March 1.

  • What Does the Fiscal Cliff Mean for CTE?

    With only days to go before the country reaches the end-of-the-year fiscal cliff, there are some signs of hope that a deal might be within reach. Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) announced that the House of Representatives will be called back into session on Sunday—both President Obama and the Senate have already returned to Washington—for a last ditch effort to reach a deal in the final hours of 2012.
