  • Education Leader Explores a Common Model for CTE

    A recent supplement to Kappan magazine authored by Jean-Claude Brizard, senior adviser at the College Board and former chief executive officer of Chicago Public Schools, promotes the value of high-quality CTE and suggests ways to make CTE a more aligned, coherent system.

  • Budget Conference Committee Begins Tackling Sequestration

    Last week, the House and Senate budget conference committee held its first official meeting. The deal to end the government shutdown and raise the federal debt ceiling that was passed by Congress in mid-October temporarily resolved the protracted budget standoff that shut down the government for 16 days. As part of the agreement, a conference committee of members of the House and Senate was tasked with creating a finalized budget plan and setting overall funding levels for FY 2014 by December 13. The committee will also attempt to tackle long-term budgetary issues like entitlement spending, tax reform and sequestration.

  • NASDCTEc Unveils Report on State Standards: Links to Common Career Technical Core

    The National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc) released a report titled “The State of Career and Technical Education: An Analysis of State CTE Standards.” The report provides an analysis and comparison of state standards related to the Common Career Technical Core (CCTC).

  • Few States Have Defined Career Readiness

    How are states defining career readiness? According to a new report from the Center on Education Policy, based on a survey of CTE leaders in 46 states (including the District of Columbia), not many are defining it at all.  Only 14 states have a statewide definition of career readiness, and in only 3 of these states is the definition distinct from the definition of college readiness.

  • Senate Hearing on Higher Ed Innovations & Student Success

    The Senate HELP committee met for a hearing on the Higher Education Act reauthorization and discussed innovative approaches to improve student success. The types of innovations discussed varied widely during the course of testimony, one trend was evident—all students should be able to earn a recognized credential in an in-demand field through a high-quality program in as little time as possible.

  • CTE Funding Spotlight: Verizon Innovative App Challenge

    In today’s funding spotlight we bring you the Verizon Innovative App Challenge, sponsored by the Verizon Foundation in partnership with the Technology Student Association (TSA), Samsung and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab. The app challenge is a nationwide competition where teams of five to seven students work with a faculty advisor to develop an original concept for a mobile app that incorporates sciences, technology, engineering and math (STEM) principles and content to address a real need in their school or community.

  • ACTE and Bipartisan Group in Congress Weigh in on School Nutrition Regulations

    The co-chairs of the Congressional CTE Caucus, Reps. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (R-PA) and Jim Langevin (D-RI), recently sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack regarding proposed federal regulations that will require all foods sold in schools to meet strict new nutritional standards. Though intended by Congress to target snack foods sold in vending machines, a la carte lines and school stores, these regulations could have a harmful effect on students in CTE culinary programs that operate student-run cafés, bakeries and catering businesses.
