| Perkins Workshop This workshop is designed to provide comprehensive technical assistance and professional development to all personnel impacted by the new Perkins legislation. Administrators, counselors and teachers will have all of their questions answered by nationally recognized experts, including ACTE Public Policy staff; attorney Michael Brustein, who has been covering the national landscape on career tech for 30 years; Hans Meeder, former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Vocational and Adult Education in the U.S. Department of Education, and others. These experts will present detailed information on the implementation of the new Perkins law, including the latest updates on transition and compliance issues such as federal cost principles, administrative rules, audits, time distribution requirements, and linkages to No Child Left Behind. Special attention will also be paid to the new Perkins accountability requirements for local funding recipients and how to target Perkins funds to meet program performance requirements. Best practices for implementing the new “Programs of Study” will be highlighted. Attendance in teams is encouraged, but not required. Special time will be provided for small group planning and discussion surrounding Perkins plan development, and policy and program experts will be available during this time to facilitate discussion and answer questions. Back to Top Math-in-CTE This workshop was so popular at ACTE’s 2005 Convention that we have brought it back for 2006. Over the past two years, the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education (NRCCTE) conducted the Math-in-CTE study. This research project tested the idea that high school students who participate in a math-enhanced CTE curriculum develop a deeper and more sustained understanding of mathematical concepts than their counterparts who participate in the traditional CTE curriculum. In this session, you will learn the process and the pedagogy used to achieve results; how to start with the CTE curriculum and not with the math curriculum; how to maximize the math in the CTE curriculum; how to structure learning using a pedagogic model; and more. Back to Top Creating a Career Academy Creating a Career Academy will teach educators how to design and/or improve career academies/small learning communities (SLCs). The workshop will provide practical guidelines from experts, with the final outcome being an action plan and a recommended timeline for instituting a career academy or SLC. Resources and research data is provided, with coached planning time also incorporated. Concurrent sessions during the ACTE Convention will reinforce the “how-to” concepts presented during the workshop.
