Atlanta is gearing up for a great professional development experience. At the end of November, more than 5,000 career and technical educators will travel to the Peach State to participate in the only professional development event dedicated to the entire career and technical education (CTE) field.

From November 30 to December 2, career and technical educators will have their choice of workshops, seminars and sessions on a wide variety of CTE topics.

Justesen to Address Attendees
Troy Justesen Assistant Secretary for the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) at the U.S. Department of Education, will address attendees at ACTE’s Annual Convention and Career Tech Expo in Atlanta in November. Justesen will share his comments as a part of the Friday General Session on December 1. Since 2000, Justesen has held several positions at the Department of Education, most recently as deputy assistant secretary for special education and rehabilitative services. Previously, he served as deputy commissioner for the rehabilitation services administration in the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. Earlier in his career, he served as associate director in the Domestic Policy Council at the White House. In addition to Justesen’s remarks, the Friday General Session will also feature a panel discussion on the future of career and technical education (CTE). Included on the panel will be:

  • Gene Bottoms from High Schools That Work
  • Richard Blais from Project Lead the Way
  • John Ferrandino from the NationalAcademy Foundation

John Bailey from The Gates Foundation will facilitate and moderate the discussion that will focus on what is changing in CTE and what needs to change.

ACTE to Debut the Advanced Learning Space
The 2006 ACTE Annual Convention and Career Tech Expo is shaping up to be an exciting and dynamic professional development experience for all career and technical educators.

The latest addition to the Convention is the Advanced Learning Space (ALS). Based on several award-winning, nationally recognized educational models and input from technology curriculum directors, teachers and supporting faculty, ACTE, in conjunction with the architectural firm of Burgess & Niple, will be showcasing how the integration of technology and architecture can enhance student learning. Georgia Tech Prep Announces Sessions
On Friday, December 1, the Georgia Tech Prep Conference will meet in conjunction with the ACTE Annual Convention and Career Tech Expo. The schedule for these sessions has just been released. These sessions cover topics from the connection between middle school and the real world to career and academic teaming for student success. ACTE is proud and excited to have the Georgia Tech Prep Conference as a part of the most dynamic professional development experience for career and technical educators.

High Schools That Work (HSTW) Announces ACTE Convention Schedule
ACTE has partnered with High Schools That Work (HSTW) to provide ACTE Annual Convention attendees an exciting new track of sessions. This group of 13 sessions, titled Using HSTW to Link Career and Technical Education to Broader High School Reform, features best practices in using the HSTW reform model to make high-quality CTE programs a central part of school improvement. In addition to an overview session, several high schools will tell their school reform stories, highlighting how they used HSTW and high-quality CTE to boost academic and technical student achievement. These schools represent a wide variety of delivery models ­from schools of choice to shared-time schools to comprehensive high schools. ACTE is excited to bring this piece of quality professional development to its Annual Convention. Plan to make these sessions part of your Convention experience.

ACTE General Session Speakers
ACTE is proud to bring to Atlanta two dynamic speakers to lead the General Sessions. Dave Weber, who has been described as a “Chihuahua on caffeine,” will begin the Convention as the Opening General Session speaker on Thursday, November 30. Finishing up on Saturday, December 2, will be Christopher Gardner, whose rags-to-riches story is sure to inspire. Read what Yahoo! Movies wrote about Christopher Gardner. In between these great speakers on Friday, December 1, will be ACTE’s National Awards program—a chance to recognize the best CTE educators in the country. Pre-Convention Workshops
ACTE has put together four quality pre-Convention Workshops. These workshops will take place on Wednesday, November 29, and will provide in-depth learning unavailable anywhere else in Atlanta. Take this opportunity to learn from respected presenters on topics such as math-in-CTE, career academies and career clusters.
